Overview
Note: Textbook required This course is designed as an introduction to American Sign Language through sign vocabulary, finger spelling and number signing. The class provides basic functional skills required for communication with the deaf. It also presents an introduction to deaf culture with enhanced exposure offered through various guest speakers (hearing and deaf). Through mime, games, music and fun students will build and strengthen their expressive and receptive practical ASL skills. No prior knowledge of sign language is required.

Overview
Prerequisite: Writing level 7 Note: Textbook required This elective composition course provides an opportunity for students to create imaginative works for pleasure and publication within the supportive atmosphere of a writing workshop. The workshop may emphasize a single genre, such as poetry, fiction, or drama. Alternatively, the workshop may allow individual students to write original compositions in genres of their interest in response to classroom assignments. Students analyze significant contemporary literature, finding models of successful forms and effective technique. In addition, they critique the work of classmates. Literary theory and strategies for publication are discussed. Students are also encouraged to participate as editors of the College literary magazines and to submit their best work for publication. Note: Bring paper and two pens Effective Study Skills (ESS) is a copyrighted, nationally published, and scientifically validated system for study developed by Houston sociologist James K. Semones. Taught to thousands of high school, college, and graduate students throughout the United States, this seminar will be taught in person by its author and developer. ESS is designed for learners 15 years of age and up. In one dynamic seminar, students are taught how to use a comprehensive, skill-based system to earn superior grades in school. Skills covered include how to read a textbook for maximum comprehension and retention, get the most out of class, take effective notes, manage time effectively, prepare for different types of exams in order to earn superior grades, conquer test anxiety, etc. The seminar also incorporates a confidential pretest to enable each participant to accurately pinpoint current skill levels and areas that need improvement.
